 the amerikan concreate institute  ( ACL ) defines silica fume as very fine crystalline silica produced in electric are furnaces as a by-product of the .production of elemental silicon or alloys containing silicon It is usually gray colored power somewhat similar to portland cement or some fly ashes. figure shows a typicalsilica fume as it appears after being collected from a furnace. silica fume is usually categorized as a supplementary cementitious material.
